Bethany Caruso is an Assistant Professor in the Hubert Department of Global Health. She received her BA from Wesleyan University, and completed her MPH in Global Health and PhD in Behavioral Sciences and Health Education at the Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH) at Emory University. From 2016-2019, Dr. Caruso received funding from the National Institutes of Public Health to complete a postdoc in the Environmental Health Department at RSPH, specifically as part of the Fellowship in Research and Science Teaching (FIRST) Program.
Dr. Caruso is a social and behavioral scientist with over a decade of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sectoral research experience in low and middle income settings. She employs mixed methods approaches to understand how compromised WASH conditions impact physical and mental health, behavior, education, and empowerment, with a specific focus on girls and women throughout their life course. Her work includes application of qualitative methods, measurement development, hierarchical modeling approaches, theory-based intervention design, and impact and process evaluation. Her work emphasizes translation to policy and practice through public scholarship and engagement with policy-makers. She has carried out fieldwork in Kenya, India, Bangladesh, and Bolivia, and has supported research in over a dozen additional countries.
Dr. Sheela Sinharoy is an Assistant Professor in the Hubert Department of Global Health. She received dual BA degrees in Sociology and Latin American Studies from Penn State University, an MPH from the Maternal and Child Health department at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, and a PhD in Nutrition and Health Sciences from Emory University. Prior to her PhD, she spent over 10 years working in program implementation, including five years working on humanitarian aid programs in Bangladesh.
Dr. Sinharoy’s research focuses on the nutrition outcomes of environmental health interventions, including in water, sanitation, and hygiene projects. She also studies gender and social inclusion as cross-cutting issues. Her work has a strong focus on inter-disciplinary and multi-sectoral approaches, program evaluation, and implementation science, to identify “what works” to improve program effectiveness. Methodologically, she is trained in both quantitative and qualitative methods. Dr. Sinharoy’s research spans across Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.
Allison received a Master of Public Health from the Rollins School of Public Health in Global Health with a certificate in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in 2018 as well as a Bachelor of Health Science in Public Health and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Florida in 2016. She has extensive experience in mixed methods tool development and data analysis with a special interest in structural equation modeling. Topically, her work focuses on WASH, gender, and social constructs (e.g., collective efficacy, social capital, empowerment, self-efficacy, etc.). Currently, Allison is working on multiple randomized controlled trials including Revitalizing Informal Settlements and their Environment (RISE) in Suva, Fiji and Makassar, Indonesia as well as Climate-Resilient Odisha Produce Study (CROPS) in Odisha, India. Prior to holding her current role in the Hubert Department of Global Health, Allison has worked in research and learning roles for CARE’s Water Team, WaterAid Cambodia, WaterSHED, and the CDC’s Malaria Branch.
Thea Mink received her Master of Public Health from the Rollins School of Public Health in Global Health and joined the EDGE team in 2022. With EDGE, she has contributed to the Measuring Urban Sanitation and Empowerment and Strong Women, Strong World projects, with a focus on WASH, gender, physical and mental health, and process evaluation for program learning and adaptation. Her mixed methods research experience includes tool development, protocol design, and data management and analysis. Before working with EDGE, Thea graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Tufts University and worked in community-engaged development and state governance.
